Wales head to tonight’s Euro 2016 semi-final with captain Ashley Williams having made an emotional tribute to former manager Gary Speed, saying: ‘We hope we’ve made you proud’.

Williams will lead Wales out against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Lyon tonight knowing just 90 minutes stand between them and an astonishing place in Sunday’s European Championship final at the Stade de France.

Wales manager Chris Coleman also revealed his sadness over the loss of his friend and predecessor Gary Speed, whom he said “could be sitting here where I am, enjoying what we’re enjoying.”

The former Leeds, Newcastle and Bolton midfielder managed the national team from 2010 until his death in 2011.

Wales are now on the brink of qualifying for their first international tournament in 57 years.

Speed died tragically in November 2011 and captain Williams said: “I have been thinking about Gary on the plane coming over.

“I was reading about his time in a book and it brought it all back.  My thought as we got here was I hope he’d be proud of us with what we’ve achieved.”

“He has seen us grow up and he is always in the back of our minds. When we achieve something as a group, we think about him.”

ConnectVIPs, wish Wales every success tonight, whilst not forgetting our dear friend Gary Speed
