Sir Bobby Robson – lasting legacy
Earlier this month, at the Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course, Vilamoura, Portugal The Sir Bobby Robson Celebrity Golf Classic took place. This annual tournament was started by Sir Bobby in 2004 with the objective of having a fun celebrity golf tournament in the sun, but most importantly to raise money for a homeless children’s charity the Refugio Aboim Ascensão, chosen by Sir Bobby and Lady Elsie, which is based in Faro, Portugal.
This year a statue of Sir Bobby sitting on a bench overlooking the eighteenth green, where he spent many happy times, was unveiled at Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course. The unveiling ceremony was attended by family and friends of Sir Bobby including André Villas-Boas, one of many young coaches that Sir Bobby helped in their careers.
André had driven down from Porto especially for the unveiling.
Since 2004, over 842,000 Euros have been raised on behalf of Sir Bobby and Lady Elsie to help the charity continue the great work they do for homeless babies and children aged under six who have been abandoned and in some cases abused. Since Sir Bobby’s death in July 2009 the tournament has continued with Lady Elsie’s blessing. Sir Bobby who loved Portugal, having won the Primeira Liga and Portugal Cup as manager of FC Porto. This is a lasting legacy to a great player and manager but, more importantly, a truly remarkable human being.
Celebrities from the world’s of football, sport and entertainment attend and play with the corporate teams for the honour of winning Bobby’s tournament played on the Championship Course at Pestana Vila Sol on the Algarve, which has twice hosted the Portuguese Open. Celebrities who have played include Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy, Alan Shearer, Kenny Dalglish, Ray Clemence, Ossie Ardiles, Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce to name just a few.
